OUR STORY

Palliative Care 2017

Page 6

Veteran Don Sladek in 2017. His eyes are swollen.

In August 2017, Don’s physician told us with love and compassion that we needed to see a palliative care physician. Don was clear about his wishes.  He did not want to spend the rest of his life chasing “snake oil,” treatments full of unproven promises, and wasting time with doctors. There would be no resuscitation, feeding tube, or even treatment for pneumonia. We put our affairs in order with a living trust.

The one concession he made to this disease was that he would donate his brain to the brain bank in the hopes that it would help find a cure after he was gone. So we decided that we would live whatever life he had to the fullest and be grateful for each day.
